John Baptist de la Salle was a Frenchman. At age of 11, he received the tonsure and prepared for priesthood to which he was ordained at 27. He held a high position in Church. Subsequently, he became more involved in working with deprived youths. Once convinced that this was his divinely appointed mission, John threw himself wholeheartedly into the work, left home and family, abandoned his position as canon at Rheims, gave away his fortune and reduced himself to the level of the poor to whom he devoted his entire life. The remainder of his life was closely entwined with education. He founded the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools(Christian Brothers, or De La Salle Brothers). This community grew rapidly and was successful in educating boys of poor families using methods designed by John, preparing teachers in the first training college for teachers and setting up homes and schools for young delinquents of wealthy families. The motivating element in all these endeavors was the desire to become a good Christian.  Afflicted with asthma and rheumatism in his last years, he died on Good Friday at 68 and was canonized in 1900. In 1900, John Baptist de La Salle was declared a saint of the Roman Catholic Church.

A few days ago, Woody Me received much dreaded news from our supplier; that in approximately 6 months’ time, Nyatoh wood furniture would no longer be available to the general public due to increasing costs and scarcity. To keep the costs down, our supplier would be shifting their focus to importing much cheaper solid wood furniture.

As this came from the mouth of one of the largest suppliers of Nyatoh furniture in Singapore, this would implicitly signal a drastic decline to the Nyatoh furniture trade that thrived in the past. Most Singaporeans might not have heard of Nyatoh wood. However, a quick browse through our items would make most Singaporeans realise that they had come into contact with Nyatoh based furniture at least once.

In Singapore, Nyatoh furniture are commonly sold under the “solid wood” tag. However, this tag is now shared by pinewood and the cheaper rubber wood alternatives. Thus, homemakers who have not knowledge of their difference would start wondering why they should choose the more expensive Nyatoh furniture over the cheaper ones. If one looks back on our past posts, one will understand the reliability and sturdiness that Nyatoh is known for. Not all woods can be used in door making nor can they be used as ship hulls. Nyatoh was capable of these and many more as mentioned previously.

Nyatoh trees are not commercially grown as it takes 100 years for it to grow to a favourable width for making furniture. With increasing costs and decreasing supplies, priority of its usage has to be given to high-return products, sidelining furniture. This brought about a potentially higher cost price for importing Nyatoh furniture for the common market which is neither of our suppliers’ interests nor Woody Me’s. Thus focus has to be shifted to lower cost furniture derived from other timber.

With the interest to cater to the mass market, gone will be the days where one can buy beautiful natural wood coloured furniture as the current price. This is because, not many other kinds of wood can stand out as much as Nyatoh. This is also the reason why in most shops, the usual practise is to sell furniture pre-sprayed with a specific colour. Gone will be the days where natural colour is the norm.

In order to follow the tides of change, WoodyMe will be introducing furniture derived from other wood sources. This includes our latest addition of SB-11 which comes from rubber wood, a renewable resource.

However, before a total change over occurs, Woody Me will not take advantage of the situation and unreasonably increase any Nyatoh furniture prices as this would go against our belief in “cheap, reliable and good”.

Dear customers do grab this chance to get your choice of Nyatoh furniture before they become part of history!! Also, look out for our latest addition from time to time as Woody Me expects to further increase our choices in the near future.
